Smoke In The Shadows is the first new full-length musical outing from aesthetic polymath Lydia Lunch since 1999's Matrikamantra. Recorded in Los Angeles over the last two years and produced in conjunction with avant-guitar star Nels Cline or Len Del Rio and Tommy Grenas respectively, Smoke In The Shadows finds Lunch inhabiting noir-ish settings of plush but scorched swing and moody jazz atmospheres reminiscent of her classic Queen Of Siam album.
Most sessions for Smoke In The Shadows took place at The Antechamber with the bulk of instrumental tracks being laid down by Tommy Grenas and Len Del Rio abetted by guitarist Nels Cline, Niels Van Hoorn (of the Legendary Pink Dots) on saxophone, and Adele Bertei (of seminal No Wave outfit The Contortions) providing backing vocals. The sessions with Cline took place at Newzone Studios and employed a larger ensemble including Cline, his brother Alex on drums, upright bassist Joel Hamilton, Joe Berardi on vibraphone and a brass section consisting of Vinny Golia, Chuck Manning, Don Ostermann, and John Fumo. Carla Bozulich (Geraldine Fibbers) added vocals to a track apiece at both sessions. One track "Portrait of the Minus Man" was done at Sartorial Sound, London with Terry Edwards playing all instruments.
